Car power inverters are the answer to keeping the comforts of home close even when in the woods camping. With many styles and wattages to choose from there is very little in the way of electric or electronic luxuries that a person cannot take with them.

A car power inverter is a device that attaches either to the battery directly or through a cigarette lighter or auxiliary plug. The inverter changes the 12 volt DC power to 120 volt AC power enabling the device to operate numerous types of gadgets.

An inverter lists the peak wattage and the continuous wattage output on the device. A person must take care to read this information carefully, since the peak wattage is the most prominent number and the unit is usually sold based on the peak wattage. This device, like most high voltage devices, usually has a circuit breaker built in to it or a fuse. This is to prevent damage to the vehicle's electrical system and the device being powered by the inverter. If a fuse is used, extra fuses have to be available to make it operational again.

These inverters usually have at least two outlets for operating other devices, but the unit itself is subject to the wattage limitations. Other features may be included on the inverter to include a universal serial bus port or USB port for computers and compatible devices. This is a very low voltage system that charges up compatible devices.

Although the car power inverter normally takes very little power, it does eventually drain the battery. To prevent this it is recommended to start the car occasionally. Even a notebook computer that is hibernating, and plugged into an inverter, still drains enough power from the battery to cause it to go dead in about 24 hours.

There are many devices that can be used in the vehicle with the invention of this tool. As long as the watt usage is kept within the parameters specified on the inverter, the only limit to what can be fit in the car. This little device is one of the most practical items to have in a vehicle.
